Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental treatment designed to reduce stains and brighten the appearance of the smile. External whitening treats discoloration on the visible surfaces of vital teeth and may be performed in the dental office or with customized take-home trays. Professional whitening solutions can address staining caused by coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, aging, and other common factors while allowing treatment to be tailored to the patient’s needs and sensitivity level.

Internal whitening is used for a non-vital tooth that has darkened from trauma, internal bleeding, or previous root canal treatment. Instead of applying whitening material to the outside of the tooth, the dentist carefully places it inside the tooth, where it targets discoloration within the tooth structure. The material may be replaced over a series of visits until the tooth reaches a shade that blends more naturally with the surrounding teeth, after which the opening is sealed with a permanent restoration.

Before recommending whitening, the dentist will examine the teeth and gums and determine whether the discoloration is best treated externally, internally, or with another cosmetic option. Fillings, crowns, veneers, and other restorations do not respond to whitening agents, so additional planning may be needed to achieve a balanced result. With professional supervision, teeth whitening can provide a safer, more predictable way to refresh the smile.

Today’s technologies provide a wide variety of whitening options to fit every need and every budget. Our practice offers the following options:

In-office Bleaching - This procedure is ideal if you want immediate results. The whole process takes about an hour, taking little time out of busy lives. A protective gel is applied to your gums to protect the soft tissue. Then a special light-activated gel is applied to your teeth and a laser light is used to enhance the action of the agent. Finally, you receive a take-home gel and instructions to keep your smile bright. The result is dramatically whiter teeth that will last for years.

Tray Whitening - Tray whitening is a less-expensive and convenient at-home whitening treatment. The results are more gradual. A scan is taken at our office in order to create a customized clear tray. Trays are generally ready within a few days and instructions are given on how to apply the gel in the trays and how often to use it. Maximum whitening results and a dazzling smile are achieved at the end of the set treatment period. An occasional treatment can be used to maintain the new smile.

Whitening Strips - There are plenty of over-the-counter options available, but our practice can provide competitive rates, plus knowledgeable suggestions. Certain ingredients in over-the-counter strips can lead to sensitivity. Let us help you choose the best convenient whitening option for you.
