Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a nonsurgical deep-cleaning treatment used to manage gum disease. It removes plaque, tartar, and harmful bacteria from the teeth and from beneath the gumline, where regular brushing and professional cleanings cannot reach. Treatment may be recommended when periodontal pockets form between the teeth and gums or when signs such as bleeding, swelling, gum recession, or bone loss are present.

During the procedure, the dental professional carefully scales the tooth surfaces to remove hardened buildup above and below the gumline. The roots are then smoothed to eliminate rough areas where bacteria can collect and to help the gums heal and reattach more securely to the teeth. Local anesthesia may be used to keep the patient comfortable, and treatment may be completed in one or more appointments.

After scaling and root planing, patients may experience temporary tenderness or sensitivity as the gums heal. Consistent brushing, flossing, and follow-up visits are important for controlling bacteria and preventing gum disease from progressing. Periodontal maintenance cleanings may also be recommended to preserve the results and protect the teeth, gums, and supporting bone.
