Overlays
Dental overlays are custom-made restorations designed to cover most or all of a tooth’s chewing surface. They are often recommended when a tooth has significant wear, cracks, decay, or structural damage but does not require a full dental crown. By preserving more of the natural tooth, overlays offer a conservative way to restore strength, function, and appearance.
An overlay is typically created from durable materials such as porcelain, ceramic, or composite resin. After the damaged area is prepared, impressions or digital scans are taken to ensure the restoration fits comfortably and blends naturally with the surrounding teeth. Once completed, the overlay is securely bonded to the tooth, helping reinforce weakened areas and create a stable biting surface.
Dental overlays can improve chewing comfort, correct uneven or worn-down teeth, and protect against further damage. With proper brushing, flossing, and routine dental visits, an overlay may provide many years of reliable service. Your dentist can evaluate your tooth and determine whether an overlay, filling, crown, or another treatment is the most appropriate option.
