A dental onlay is a conservative restorative option for rebuilding a tooth that has lost strength because of decay, a large filling, a fracture, or heavy wear. Sometimes called a partial crown, an onlay covers the damaged chewing surface and one or more cusps while leaving healthy areas of the tooth intact. It can provide additional protection without requiring the extensive reshaping associated with a traditional crown.

To create an onlay, the dentist first removes weakened or decayed material and prepares the tooth. Detailed impressions or digital scans are then used to design a restoration that matches the tooth’s natural contours and bite. Depending on the technology available, the onlay may be produced in a dental laboratory or fabricated and placed during the same visit.

After the restoration is bonded in place, it helps distribute biting pressure across the tooth and reduces stress on vulnerable areas. Tooth-colored ceramic and porcelain onlays can be closely matched to the surrounding enamel, making them suitable for visible areas of the smile. Good oral hygiene, routine examinations, and avoiding habits such as chewing ice can help an onlay remain strong and attractive for years.
