Inhalation Sedation
Inhalation sedation, commonly known as nitrous oxide or “laughing gas,” is a safe and gentle way to help patients feel calmer during dental treatment. The gas is mixed with oxygen and delivered through a small mask placed over the nose. Patients remain awake and able to communicate while experiencing a relaxed, comfortable feeling.
This form of sedation can be helpful for patients with dental anxiety, a sensitive gag reflex, difficulty sitting still, or concerns about certain procedures. The dentist can adjust the level of sedation throughout the appointment based on the patient’s needs. Inhalation sedation begins working within minutes, making it a convenient option for many routine and more involved dental treatments.
Once treatment is complete, the nitrous oxide is turned off, and the patient breathes pure oxygen for several minutes. The relaxing effects typically wear off quickly, allowing most patients to return to their usual activities without lingering drowsiness. Before treatment, the dental team will review the patient’s health history to determine whether inhalation sedation is an appropriate choice.
