Periodontal (Gum) Treatments

It’s estimated that more than half of U.S. adults have gingivitis. Gingivitis, in some cases, can lead to periodontitis (gum disease) and a host of other health problems.

Gum disease can cause bleeding, swelling, bad breath, pain, receding gums and tooth loss. But it doesn’t always stop there. Your oral health is the beginning point for your whole body’s health and wellness. It is imperative that we stop problems before they even start!

Gum disease causes a buildup of bacteria in deep pockets between the teeth and gums. That bacteria can transfer to your bloodstream when gums bleed, putting you at a much higher risk to develop the following health problems:

-Heart Disease
-Diabetes
-Ulcers
-Osteoporosis
-Arthritis
-Pre-Term Births

Periodontal treatment typically involves containing the infection through a deep cleaning like scaling and root planing, clearing buildup at the root of the teeth. We may also suggest specific toothpastes and mouth rinses or prescribe antibiotics to fight infections. Surgery is required for the most severe cases.

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing (SRP), often called a deep dental cleaning, is a nonsurgical treatment for gum disease. During the procedure, plaque, tartar, and harmful bacteria are carefully removed from above and below the gumline. The tooth roots are then smoothed to eliminate rough areas where bacteria can collect, helping the gums heal and reattach more securely to the teeth.

Depending on your needs, scaling and root planing may be completed in one or more appointments, with local anesthesia used to keep you comfortable. Following treatment, you may notice reduced gum inflammation, bleeding, and tenderness, along with fresher breath and improved gum health. Regular periodontal maintenance visits and consistent brushing and flossing are important for protecting your results and preventing gum disease from progressing.

Arestin Medication

Arestin is a prescription antibiotic used to help treat periodontal (gum) disease. It contains minocycline in the form of tiny, slow-release microspheres.

After scaling and root planing (SRP), a dental professional places Arestin directly into deeper periodontal pockets. It gradually releases medication to reduce bacteria and help decrease pocket depth.

Arestin supplements—not replaces—SRP and good oral hygiene. It should not be used by patients allergic to minocycline or other tetracycline antibiotics.
