An adult prophy, or professional dental cleaning, is a preventive treatment designed to maintain healthy teeth and gums. During the appointment, a dental hygienist removes plaque, tartar, and surface stains that cannot always be eliminated through brushing and flossing alone. After removing buildup, the hygienist polishes the teeth and may floss between them to leave the mouth feeling clean and refreshed. Adult prophylaxis is generally recommended for patients who have healthy gums or mild gingivitis without significant bone loss.
